Music

Thespis understands the importance of performance not only for self confidence and social development, but for educational growth at any age.  We believe that music and the theoretical understanding of music is particularly crucial for the development of concentration, logic and rhythm.

Music can evoke so many emotions not only through its collaboration with other performance skills, such as drama and dance, but can aid as a means of relaxing and inspiring.

Group workshops and summer schools will focus on the development of rhythm and ear training, including understanding pitch and singing as an ensemble.  Development of harmony and vocal projection will also be included as strong elements to the training that Thespis offers.

Private piano tuition is also available, teaching students up to ABRSM (Associated Board) Grade 8.

Nina Baker, Head of Music

Nina Baker

"Theatre, music and the arts has played a significant role in my life since the tender age of five, training at the Theatre Royal Arts Studio and Central School of Dancing and Performing Arts. My experience as a dancer, who trained in all disciplines up to the age of seventeen has proven to be hugely beneficial for me as a performer on stage.

Prior to my BA degree which was achieved at the University of Essex I performed with the NYMT for five years. During this time I undertook intensive vocal training focusing primarily on musical theatre performance. My vocal training, which continued for eight years educated me on the importance of diaphragmatic breathing, posture and articulation.

My passion for the theatre and performance from a young age extended to a love for music and the pianoforte. I trained for twelve years working through the piano ABRSM examination syllabus achieving significantly high grades throughout. I also trained under the guidance of ABRSM Examiner, composer and renowned pianist, Christopher Green-Armytage.

As a classically trained pianist, I dedicate my time to guiding students through the ABRSM piano examinations, Trinity Guildhall musical theatre and Shakespeare modules and prepare students for the County Music Festivals. As a musician a large majority of my time is also spent performing professionally as a singer and pianist. I have been privileged enough to work some amazing performers and have done so for the past four years".
